I am writing in response to the coverage in the Journal (January 16) of the implementation of St Anne’s crossing on Harrowby Road.

Councillor Richard Davies’ comments indicate his shameful ignorance of the situation.

As district councillor, I fought Lincolnshire County Council’s Highways officers for years when they refused to restore a lollipop person outside St Anne’s School. For two years, former county councillor Adam Stokes and LCC Highways officers repeatedly proposed over-engineered crossing designs, without a lollipop person. They were opposed by the local community, myself and district councillor Mike Cook.

Parents need somewhere to park when they pick up and drop off children and the loss of over 24 on-street spaces in the vicinity of the school would have created an increased safety risk as parents sought alternative parking places.

When elected county councillor for Grantham South, I established that through making the crossing site safer, reducing speed and increasing visibility, a safety report stated a lollipop person could be reinstated. I drew director for highways Richard Wills’ attention to the resident petitions and road safety improvement suggestions submitted to LCC Highways officers but previously overlooked. He agreed to work with me on a solution design using those ideas. We had a joint meeting with the former lollipop lady and representative from the church hall, who was also a resident.

The result was the amended and approved plan that comes with a reduced speed limit, has a significantly reduced impact on street parking and provides a safer crossing place, enabling a lollipop person to be reinstated. That we finally have a crossing is the result of a community-wide effort.

If Coun Davies is concerned about pedestrian safety, he will stop his officers stalling on the provision of pedestrian facilities at the dangerous McDonald’s junction.
