I read Coun Ian Selby’s comments with distress and alarm.
The EDL are a menace and not an influence I care to see in the town where my son is growing up. That being said, freedom of speech allows them the right to preach their hate-fuelled bile. It is a shame that most of them negate to realise that freedom of religion is also a right that our country allows.
A peaceful counter protest is not only a good idea, but a necessary one. All evil needs to thrive is for good people to do nothing. Coun Selby personifies everything that is wrong with the running of our country - a distinct lack of balls!
Our immigration laws need to be tightened and people should be able to voice their genuine non-hate fuelled concerns without being labelled racist. Our government’s failure to apply this only leads to the rise of hate, fear and ignorance in its people and the acceptance of organisations such as the EDL.
Well I do not accept the EDL or their flawed ideology. They claim to be proud to be British and yet manage to make me feel exactly the opposite. They claim to protest against those who preach hate, by preaching hate. They judge people by the colour of their skin, the god they worship, the place they came from and the clothes they wear. That is ignorance - worse, it is hateful ignorance. That is far more dangerous in my eyes than any god-fearing good Muslim. You cannot cure hate with hate and you cannot cure intolerance with intolerance.
I, for one, hope that the counter protest has a great turnout, at least those people are not afraid to stand up for what they believe in - perhaps Coun Selby and several others in positions of influence could learn something from that.
‘You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.’ - Winston Churchill.
Get off your high horse councillor. Your condemnation of those with some passion left in their hearts to do good, speaks volumes about your character. How disappointing.
