I was pleased to see Can Cabs running the Home Safe scheme, which I support all the way.

But it is not a new idea.

In July 1999 the Journal was present at the launch of the Get Home Safe scheme run by GBcabs.

Also present were PC Matthew Morrissey, taxi enforcement officer, John Clarke and myself.

At that time it was not an easy thing to do and I needed the permission of the council, taxi department and the local police. The authorities contacted other areas to see if the scheme was operating anywhere else, but it was discovered the scheme run by me here in Grantham was the first.

I enclose a photo taken by the Journal at the original launch.

■ Can Cabs should be congratulated on the ‘Home Safe’ cards scheme.

I think this is something that should be considred by all taxi companies in the town. It not only provides reasurance for parents but if all local companies signed up to this idea it would also prevent rogue taxis operating.

I suggest an app, proving membership, could be made for mobile phones. People are more likely to carry a phone than one of the cards.
