Our nation inspired by Olympic glory ... and sideburns

Over the last two weeks, I have had the great joy of watching the Olympics and seeing many of our athletes from around the nation competing for the ultimate prize of the Olympic Gold medal.

When I watched the glorious 45 minutes where Jessica Ennis, Greg Rutherford and Mo Farrah won on Saturday, I was overcome with the number of superlatives I could utter to describe them.

Passionate. Proud. Gracious. They are just a few that I managed to express.

I was particularly touched by the athletes thanking all who had supported them through their training, through the highs and the lows, and helped them to where they were.

For example, Greg Rutherford had received support from his local Rotary Club in Bedford, that had allowed him to keep on training and ultimately helped him onto the podium.

My son has been watching the events with interest. This is the Olympic sporting event that he has really taken an interest in and has seen a few sports that he would not normally see.

He has become very interested in the running and the cycling, but did get bored with my insistence on watching the badminton. However, he is thinking of growing some sideburns, jumping on his bike and trying to emulate the success of Bradley Wiggins.

For me, I feel that the Olympics in London have helped focus the nation on something positive. In what have been very tough times for a lot of people, the Olympics bring a sense of hope and optimism.

Where individual effort and hard team work is rewarded with success. Where camaraderie between nations and our rich diversity is celebrated.

I was very proud to meet some Olympians when they visited Grantham Museum, and very happy to welcome the torch through our town.

Although I have not travelled to London, I feel I have been part of these events and look forward to seeing the future success of the athletes these Games have inspired in 2012.
