HAVING met John Andrews many years ago and known him as a likeable, sociable and intelligent acquaintance (and, incidentally, no mean squash player!) I was disappointed to read his letter (Journal, June 10).
Most of us would agree that lifeboatmen and firefighters perform heroic action, but the same selfless courage is certainly displayed by our armed forces, past and present.
John’s condemnation of armed intervention for political and economic ends is quite understandable, but it fails to acknowledge that decisions for such conflicts are taken by politicians - not by troops on the front line.
John, do you really think that without our resistance years ago to Kaiser Bill and Adolf Hitler we would be enjoying the freedom to express our own personal opinions in local and national media?
