GRANTHAM Town boss John Wilkinson has appointed a new skipper following the departure of stalwart Brendan McDaid.
Stepping into McDaid's boots is Terry Fleming who made his Gingerbreads debut on Boxing Day last season and made 21 appearances in Town's campaign that ended in a Unibond League Division One South play-off berth.
Midfielder Fleming has a wealth of experience at Football League level, including five years at Lincoln City.
Wilkinson said: "With nearly 500 League appearances behind him, captains won't come much more experienced than that.
"His approach in training and during matches has been a great example to all the players at the club. I fully expect him to take that on to next season."
The captain's armband became available after McDaid chose to return to Lincoln United.
During three spells at Grantham, McDaid racked up almost 300 appearances and 60 goals, including 15 last season.
Wilkinson said: "I have nothing but admiration for Brendan. I wanted to keep him, but in the end it was his choice and I wish him all the best."
Fleming's right-hand man will be striker Jason Turner who returned to The Meres in October and found his form late in the season with five goals in nine games.
Wilkinson said: "Jason hasn't had a proper pre-season for the last two years due to injuries. He is a great character around the place and wanted the vice-captaincy no matter what for next season."
Town's FA Cup campaign will kick off against Ridgeons Premier Division opposition in the Preliminary Round on August 30.
Drawn at home for the first time in three years, the Gingerbreads will host either Newmarket Town or Woodbridge Town.
The FA Trophy Preliminary Round takes place on October 4 when Grantham will visit Unibond Division One North side Clitheroe.
Wilkinson's side is starting to take shape and they commenced pre-season training at The Meres on Tuesday.
The squad assembled so far comprises Glen Atkinson, Nathan Beardsley, Sean Cann, Nick Conroy, Terry Fleming, Joby Gowshall, Scott Lowman, John Machin, Sam Mullarkey, Jack Pemberton, Dominic Revill, Adam Sturgess, Jason Turner and George Zeurner.
Supporters have a chance to meet players and management at a Fans' Forum at Strikers Bar on Tuesday at 8pm, when the Gingerbreads' new away kit will be on show.
