Saturday, 5pm- THE OWNER of a traditional greengrocers, who received a standing ovation when he won a Journal Business Award, is not planning to change a thing.Arnold Graham, which opened in December 1955, won the Independent Retailer of the Year Award, sponsored by Springfield House.

David Graham, who owns the shop with his dad, did not expect to win the award.

He said: "I was surprised when our name was called out as the winner but then I was surprised to get into the last three.

"It's nice to feel appreciated. My father was at the awards and he was really pleased with it all."

This is the first time the shop has won a business award and David keeps it on the shelf behind the counter for everyone to see.

He said: "I'm really pleased that somebody nominated us and we were judged against other shops and won.

"We've had a bit more trade since we won. People we've probably not seen before have come in and congratulated us on winning it. If anybody nominates me again I hope to retain the award."

Entering the quaint shop feels like stepping back in time and David is not planning any changes.

He said: "A lot of people comment on it. Visitors come in the summer and even local people say that they like a shop to be like this.

"We're going to carry on as we are. It's been successful all these years so we don't need to change it."

Good customer service is very high on the agenda in the shop and David is well trained having worked in the shop since he was at school.

He said: "I'm going to keep going and serving everyone. We're able to supply everybody with the things they want. If we haven't got it we can get it the following day."

They also supply lots of local businesses including other business award winners.

David said: "We have got lots of regular customers. We've got somebody who came in when we first opened and still supply her now. She comes in once a week."
