Grantham Athletic Club performed admirably at last weekend’s Lincolnshire County Cross-country Championships in Louth.

Twenty-five athletes represented the club as they took on the best athletes in the county on with a very tough course.

The event started with a non-championship race for the under-11s in which Hollie Smith ran a good race for sixth place and Peter Braybrook had his best race of the season, finishing third.

The official county championship races commenced with the under-13s. Helen Braybrook took up the lead from the start and proved too strong for the rest of the field to become county champion in her first year in this age group. Isabel Hobday, Phoebe Richards-Cole and Abbie-Mae Smith took fourth, 14th and 18th respectively to give the Grantham girls the team silver.

The boys’ under-13 race proved very competitive with four Grantham athletes in the top 10. George Hatton chased the lead athlete hard on the second lap to take silver, whilst Lewis Davey, Aaron Hunt and William Tucker came in sixth, seventh and ninth respectively to give Grantham AC team gold.

Saskia Hunt, Letitia Barrowcliff and Hannah Sharp represented Grantham in the under-15 girls’ and all competed well to take eighth, 15th and 21st respectively. In the boys’ race over 4km, Ethan Richards-Cole was first home for Grantham in ninth place.

Returning after long-term injury problems, Adam Madge, ran strongly to take 14th in the senior men’s race. The veteran men ran over the same 9.7km course and Arthur Short continued his great form by finishing a creditable fourth. Paul Davidson (10th) Mark Tucker (27th), Dave Eldridge (36th) and Phil Hall (38th) made up the Grantham AC team who picked up fourth in the team event.

The under-17 boys’ race was another very competitive event with Jake Richardson putting in a great performance to take silver. Josh Lord finished sixth and Max Butler battled hard for 13th place. Their efforts were rewarded with the team bronze.

The under-20 women were represented by Naomi Collier who won silver. In the senior women’s race, Grantham AC had Sophie Hunt and Victoria Hardwick running. Sophie was first home for Grantham, taking 15th, and Victoria finished 23rd.
