ATHLETICS: Grantham AC perform well in Lincs League

A total of 44 members of Grantham Athletic Club took part in the second match of the Lincolnlshire Athletic Track and Field League at The Meres on Sunday.

Amongst them were two of the newest members of the club who put in a good performance in the under-11 600m, with Matthew Dunstan coming second followed by Charles Roberts in third.

A mixed under-13 800m race saw Helen Braybrook finish first, followed closely by her brother Peter who was the first of the boys.

The club’s lady throwers were in outstanding form, finishing first, second and third in the discus, javelin, hammer and shot.

In the under-20 men, Ryan Carley came first in all of five events he competed in, scoring 70 points for the team. Another multi-eventer, taking part in seven events and scoring 69 points, was Sam Bainbridge.

The next match is at The Meres on Sunday, May 31. Prior to that will be the Lincolnshire County Championships at The Meres next Sunday (May 10).

l Grantham AC teenager Amy Hunt put in two strong performances at the Birchfield Harriers Open in Birmingham.

Competing in the under-15s, Amy was the fastest at 100m in 12.43 and second with 25.47 in the 200m. Both sprint times were fractions of a second off England Schools standard.

l Grantham AC athlete Josh Brown, who is a student at Millfield School, competed in his first Decathlon in the Somerset Championships at the weekend.

His score of 5,534 points earned him second place and also broke the club record, which has stood for 26 years, by 182 points.

Individual event performances: 100m 11.42s, Long Jump 6.00m, Shot 11.49m, High Jump 1.72m, 400m 53.31s, 110m Hurdles 17.57s, Discus 27.63m, Pole Vault 3.10m, Javelin 44.49m, 1500m 5m 10.35s.

He has been selected to represent Somerset in the South West Schools’ Regional Championships in June.
