Six athletes from Grantham schools were selected to represent Lincolnshire at the premier event for school athletes – the English Schools’ Athletic Championships at Gateshead International Stadium over the weekend.
In the under-15 girls’ 100m, Amy Hunt of KGGS retained the title that she won last year as a 13-year-old. On Friday, she won her heat in 12.3sec and the semi-final in 11.96 – a personal best. She was the only girl in her age group to dip under 12.0. In much more blustery conditions on Saturday, she won the final in 12.22, running into a head wind.
Her time maintained her position at the top of the national age group rankings.
Her Grantham Athletic Club coach, Ian Richards, praised her maturity and focus throughout the two days and was delighted with her progress over the last year: “Once again she has had the tremendous support and guidance of her family and that has proved a very firm foundation to her competitive regime.
“Maybe an outing later in the season will lower her PB even further, before starting to plan the campaign for next season.”
Tom Evans, King’s School, who was last year’s under-15 300m champion, ran in the under-17 400m. He qualified for the final with a heat time of 51.1sec. In difficult conditions on Saturday, he was fifth in the final with a time of 50.29.
Lewis Davey, Priory Ruskin Academy, contested the under-15 boys’ 80m hurdles last year. Having changed to 400m hurdles this year, he competed in the under-17 boys’ age group. He qualified for the final with a heat time of 58.55sec. Running in the outside lane in the final, he was placed sixth with a time of 57.14s which was a personal best.
Praise Olalare, Prior Ruskin, Abbie Byron and Katie Mackintosh, both Walton Girls, were competing in these championships for the first time.
