More than 440 athletes completed the Newton’s Fraction Half-marathon and 113 finished the Little Apple fun run races based at The Meres.

The events, staged by Grantham Athletic Club, attracted record entries with Shane Robinson of Lincoln Wellington AC and Emily Foran of Sleaford Town Runners winning the half marathon in times of 1hr15min 11sec and 1.27.46 respectively.

The first Grantham athletes home in the race were GAC’s Adam Madge (10th) in 1.25.24 and Grantham Running Club’s Abi Schofield (3rd) in 1.34.45. The GRC trio of Abi, Penny Hodges and Sarah High took the female team award.

Ropsley Road Runner Tony John was second local home in 1.27.57 and first veteran.

An unusual aspect of the race was the award of £100 vouchers to the 100th male and female finishers by race sponsor Brooks in their centenary year, with Tommy Williamson of Grantham taking the male prize and Louise McCauley of Sleaford receiving the female award.

The Little Apple 3km fun run winners were GAC’s George Hatton (9.51) and Helen Braybrook (10.55).

On behalf of GAC, the club’s honorary treasurer Tony Madge acknowledged the support of marshals and volunteers who helped out on the day, with special thanks to those from Inspire+ and local sponsors Brewster’s Brewery and Hills Poly-Print.

The proceeds of the Little Apple fun run and sports massages provided by David McKee will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support.
