Grantham Running Club beginners’ classes were launched with a bang on Monday night with more than 50 runners of all abilities signing up to take part.
After an extensive recruitment campaign, both the ‘Couch to 5k’ and ‘10 weeks to 10k’ classes received fantastic support from the town in what is set to be the most successful beginners’ class to date.
GRC beginners coordinator and run leader Penny Hodges is heading a team of experienced runners, offering comprehensive support to help each of the newcomers achieve their individual running goals.
The ‘Couch to 5k’ class is aimed at enabling beginners to progress from run/walk level to confidently complete their first parkrun. The ‘10 weeks to 10k’ class will culminate in runners competing in the GRC-hosted Summer Solstice 10km on Friday, June 17.
The classes have a proven track record with a number of 2015 beginners – Martin Carter, Nick Jones, and Richard Dobbs – successfully completing March’s Newton’s Fraction Half Marathon and Margaretta Murray completing the Great North Run in September.
“I decided to join the Couch to 5k course with GRC as I had committed to run a 5k charity race at work and I thought it would be a good way to improve my fitness,” commented 2015 beginner Michelle Allbones. “I was a bit apprehensive at first as I couldn’t run for more than a minute at a time, but everyone was so supportive. Since undertaking the course I’ve signed up for my first half marathon and have completed my UKA Leader in Running Fitness qualification.”
Along with Michelle, 2015 beginner Rick Dobbs has also successfully completed his UKA Leader in Running Fitness qualification to help lead the sessions, which take place at 6.45p, on Mondays and Wednesdays from The Meres leisure centre. Late applicants are still welcome. More information can be found at www.granthamrunningclub.co.uk/beginners/index.php
