THREE local athletes qualified through county and regional championships to represent Lincolnshire in the final of the English Schools Combined Events Championship at Bedford last weekend.
Previous winners of these championships have included Olympic athletes Louise Hazel, Katarina Thompson-Johnson and Daniel Awde. Jessica Ennis only managed second in the under-17 girls’ heptathlon in 2001.
This year, Millie Cooper placed ninth in the under-19 girls’ heptathlon with a personal best score of 3,900 points (100m hurdles 15.48sec, high jump 1.44m, shot 7.50m pb, 200m 26.57sec, javelin 27.16m, 800m 2m 37.21sec).
Zoe Lucas was 34th in the under-17 heptathlon, scoring 3,343 points (80m hurdles 12.45sec, high jump 1.47m, shot 6.00m, 200m 27.85m, long jump 4.22m, javelin 15.06m pb, 800m 2m 42.62sec).
In the under-17 boys’ octathlon, Joshua Brown produced three personal bests performances, finishing with a score of 4,723 points to gain an excellent sixth place (long jump 6.03m, discus 24.91m, javelin 45.94m pb, 400m 53.68sec pb, 100m hurdles 14.25sec, high jump 1.83m, shot 11.36m pb, 1500m 4m 55.00sec). He has moved up to seventh in the UK rankings for his age group.
All three local athletes still have another year in their respective age groups.
