ATHLETICS: Relegated Grantham Athletic Club bounces back to win first match of season in North of England Athletics League

After the disappointment of relegation by just four points at the end of last season, a strong team represented Grantham Athletic Club in the opening North of England Atletics League match of 2012 at Cleethorpes.

In cold conditions the team, with ages ranging from 16 years to 51 years, had an outstanding day, winning the match by a 175 points.

Thirty-nine first places were gained and personal best performances were chalked up by from Millie Cooper Alice Macgowan, Jake Hornby and Josh Brown.

Naomi Collier set a new club record for under 20 women in the 800m with a time of 2min 24.4sec.

In the same age group Millie Cooper set new club records in the 100m hurdles with 15.8sec and 400m hurdles in 72.1sec.

> Forty-seven members of Grantham Athletic Club competed in the County Championships at The Meres stadium last weekend, when 36 first places were gained with 54 personal best performances and eight club records.

Club records were set by Naomi Collier, under-20 women’s 800m; Laura Evans, vet35 discus and hammer; Joshua Brown, under-17 men’s 400m hurdles; Hayden Richards, under-20 men’s javelin; Phil Garner, vet50 shot, discus and hammer.

Meeting best performances were achieved by Rebecca Hall in the sernior women’s shot, with a putt of 11.82m. This performance was the outstanding performance of the championships and Rebecca was awarded the Lincoln City and Colleges Trophy in recognition of this achievement.

Joshua Brown set a meeting best performance of 57.6s in the under-17 men’s 400m hurdles. Joshua was awarded the Tommy Clay Trophy for outstanding performances by an under-15 boy over the past year, in recognition of his achievements in track and field, combined events, sportshall athletics and cross country.

Laura Evans was awarded the Libby Robinson Trophy for the best female discus throw with a performance of 32.52m

Two personal best performances were gained by Shelbie Jackson, Gabbie Lord, Kimberley Newell, Hannah Cook, Zoe Lucas, Jake Hornby and Josh Lord; three personal bests by Letitia Barrowcliff, Tilly Ireland, Oliver Williams and Ryan Carley, with five personal bests by Joshua Brown.
