GRANTHAM Athletic Club entered two teams in this year’s Adidas Thunder Run at Catton Park in Derbyshire.
The UK’s premier off-road 24-hour relay race against the clock took place on a multi-terrain courseis designed to be both physically challenging and mentally tough. It was all about tactics, endurance, speed and teamwork.
A couple of late withdrawals due to injuries to some of the experienced off-road runners meant that GAC had to call in 200m sprinter Rupert Jordan, decathlete Mark Gray and road running captain Paul Davidson to augment the squad of seasoned cross-country runners and road marathon specialists.
Despite the last minute nature of the squad, the runners covered an impressive 620km of hilly forest track in the allotted time with Stu Sinclair, Jerry Hyde and Arthur Short each running well in excess of full marathon distance.
Overall GAC took seventh and eighth places out of the 147 teams that completed the event, up from 10th last year.
