As they move into close season, Belvoir Tri Club enjoyed more success with novice triathlete Abi Schofield.
Abi, a relative newcomer to triathlon, but an experienced swimmer and runner, made her debut open water appearance at the Big Cow Sprint Distance Triathlon, held at Emberton Country Park near Milton Keynes.
The race was only Abi’s fourth triathlon and her first attempt at qualifying for the GB Age Group team as this race was an ETU qualifier for Geneva 2015.
The race was Sprint distance format, covering 750m in the swim, 20km on the bike and 5km on the run.
It all went very well for Abi, despite struggling in the swim due to the fact that multiple age groups had been combined into one large starting wave. She went on to record 11min 41sec and completed the bike leg in 39.04, rounding off the race with a 21.35 run.
Abi said: “I was really pleased with the bike leg given that I completed it on a secondhand £200 bike, put together my begging and borrowing parts from fellow athletes and local bike shops.”
Her overall time of 1.14.47 was enough to place her fifth in the age group she was racing in, but as she was moving up to the 25-29 age group next year, the decision on qualification was taken on how her result would fit into the finish times in that bracket.
Her result placed her fourth in the 25-29s, and third within the group of athletes who had registered their intent to qualify for Geneva 2015.
Abi was understandably elated to qualify for the GB team. She said: “I’m over the moon, especially as it’s my first season. I now need to work out how I get there financially.”
All GB Age Group athletes are self- funded and Abi will be looking for sponsorship opportunities over the coming weeks and months.
