Mark Dean did Belvoir Triathlon Club proud in an exciting, adrenaline pumping, leg sapping, mud fuelled off-road duathlon held at Holme Pierrepont on Saturday .

The course, consisting of a 5km run, a 16km bike ride and a 2.5km run, stood clear of the perimeter road circumference of the lake apart from a couple of short sections, though these sections did give competitors the opportunity to make up some vital places in between the narrow and technical sections of the bike route.

The finale to the Midlands Off Road Series was certainly a course that challenged all fitness levels and competitors faced the harsh test of extremely windy weather conditions with possibly the most technical bike section of the series, plus there was deep sticky mud at every turn with which to contend.

Mark finished in a great time of 1hr 53min 24sec and said: “Probably a course better suited to cyclo-cross riders than mountain bikers, and I encountered no end of problems with my bike; some mechanical and some environmental – and by environmental I mean mud!

“Who would have thought that a mountain bike could actually fail in mud? Both my wheels got jam packed with the stuff and I could not generate enough forward momentum to clear it off by riding through it.”

“It felt like I spent more time off the bike clearing mud or dismounting to run up some sections as no traction was left to ride up. The run sections reminded me of my school cross country on incredibly cold and very windy winter days. I couldn’t wait for a bath and a beer.”

The rest of the hardy Belvoir bunch spent their Saturday morning at Grantham’s parkrun, a weekly free 5km timed run held each Saturday morning in the grounds of Belton House.

This week’s event saw a good turnout from Belvoir Tri competing, with some great times across the finish line, despite the struggle in the very gusty and cold winds.

The club announced this week that two more L1 coaches, Claire Armstrong and Catherine Davies, have joined their coaching team.

Claire and Catherine join the ever-growing team of coaches and the Belvoir Triathlon Club now have several Team GB coaches, with Claire recently representing the country at the Chicago World Championships.
