AN air cadet from 47F (Grantham) Squadron Air Training Corps won first place in Trent Wing cross country competition last weekend and is now considered to be the fastest in the Wing.

Cadet Corporal Matt Smith (pictured), 17, is a student at Priory Ruskin Academy and has been a cadet at the Grantham squadron for four years. Matt is no stranger to winning this event as this is the fourth successive time he has taken part in the annual event held at RAF Cranwell – and has won every time.

This year he ran the three-mile course in the fastest time of 18 minutes and set a new course record. Matt was rewarded for his win when he received winner’s trophy.

Matt competed with 71 other runners who are the best in the Wing, which is made up of 30 other squadrons.

Matt is a keen runner and trains three times a week, running 10km each time. He is currently studying for a BTEC in sports at the Grantham Academy.

The next step is to represent the Trent Wing and run for the Central and East Region on the same course in March. If he wins, as he has also done for the past four years, he will compete against the best runners in the Air Training Corps at national level, hoping to become champion for a second time.

Matthew said: “It was a fantastic feeling coming first again. The course is always a challenge, as is the weather which can make all the difference to the speed in which I can run it safely.”
