ATHLETICS: Hot shot Hatherley runs to eighth in Ropsley Raid

THERE was a good turnout of Grantham athletes for both distances at this year’s Ropsley Raid.

In the longer 13.7-mile version, Ben Hatherley’s eighth place overall reflected the hard training he has been doing recently for the London Marathon. He was able to ease away from Stu Sinclair whose marathon training is at a less advanced stage.

John Ellerby coped well with over the 19 styles in the route, trailing by less than a minute behind Stu. Stepping up to the longer distance again, Keith Measures took advantage of good underfoot conditions to post an impressive time.

In the tough six-mile version of the off-road race, Marijke De Groot put her long standing knee problems to one side to finish in 53min 40sec. Bill Lord was just behind in 56.18 with Hayley Sinclair just missing the hour mark.

Results, 13.7-mile: Ben Hatherley 1.37.56, Stu Sinclair 1.49.36, John Ellerby 1.50.32, Keith Measures 2.09.42; 6-mile - Marijke De Groot 53.40, Bill Lord 56.13, John Bainbridge 56.13, Hayley Sinclair 61.52, Yvonne Taylor 72.21.

l Sunday’s Folksworth 15-mile hilly road race was made tougher by the high winds.

Established as one of the “must do” warm-ups for the spring marathon, it has attracted Grantham athletes since it was first run in 1990.

In her first race of 2012, Grantham AC’s Catherine Payne collected the veterans’ prize in her category, despite being almost two minutes adrift of last year’s time due to the conditions.

Results: Robert McArdle 1.54.24, Catherine Payne 1.54.49.

l Two members of Ropsley Road Runners also took part in the Folksworth race.

The duo battled the very windy conditions well, with Tony Johnson finishing in 1.44.04 for 71st place out of 440 finishers. Clubmate Nigel McDermott recorded 1.59.07 for 198th.
