MEMBERS of Grantham Athletic Club sprang a surprise presentation on joint president and chairman Mike Bundy at South Kesteven Sports Stadium last Wednesday night.Mike celebrated his 80th birthday last month and members decided to award him a silver badge and framed photograph in recognition of his dedication to the club since its inception in 1974.

Assistant secretary Shelagh Woollard said members, both young and old, were collectively in awe of the octagenarian's stamina in turning out to training and racing in all weathers.

She said: "We just wanted to say thank you to him."

The club commissioned Grantham jeweller John Cussell to craft a one-off silver lapel badge to add to Mike's collection.

The badge, featuring the GAC logo and the legend 'President Mike Bundy', was presented by vice-chairman Tony Woollard.

The club arranged a secret photo call the previous week, and the resulting framed image was presented to Mike by youth athletic girls' manager Debbie Wood.

Shelagh presented Mike's wife, Joyce, with an orchid plant.
