CRICKET: Woolsthorpe go top with battling win

BELTON won the toss and put Woolsthorpe into bat on a very wet track.
Wilson and Dobson battled hard before Wilson (12) went, caught well by Fellows off Oates.
Webster came in and looked at ease with the conditions, with a massive six getting him off the mark. Dobson (21) and Ward (8) fell quickly to leave the visitors 66-3 off 19 overs, but Paine (25) and Webster but together a partnership of 45 to settle Woolsthorpe down.
Webster reached his half-century before being caught off T. Oates’ first ball for a well made 51 in tricky conditions.
Belton Park’s reply got off to the worst possible start and they were 10-2 after threeovers, but the impressive Dan Turner and young Sheardown hit some nice shots to take Park to 57 off 11, before the latter was clean bowled by Whatton (2-32). Turner continued to dominate and reached 40 before being caught by Whatton in the deep off Woolsthorpe skipper Ward, leaving Belton 85-4 off 15 overs.
Park then lost five wickets for only 29 runs as the silver fox Tony Johnson ripped through the Belton batting order, taking 5-30 off his 10 overs. Meade and N. Oates put up some resistance for the last wicket before Meade was trapped LBW off Warburton to give Woolsthorpe a hard fought 44 runs victory and put them top of the table for the first time this year.
Sproxton 88 all out
Bottesford 90-3
PHIL Irvine captained the Bottesford side and his undeated 55 was enough to chase down the visitors restricted total, which included a fine 52 from Simon Jessop.
Silverwood was economical, taking 4-10 off 10 overs, with three wickets apiece to Hutchinson and Robinson. Cameron Corkett also bowled well but the highlight of the game was the catch he took off Dan Robinsons bowling to take the wicket of Johny Watchorn, one-handed at full stretch.
A good game of cricket saw two youngsters playing against each other for the first time – Dan Copley of Sproxton and Will Seymour of Bottesford – both of whom play for Bottesford under-13s.
Division Three
Empingham 136 all out
Barrowby 137-4
BARROWBY’S up-turn in form continued with a comprehensive victory against Empingham.
The home side put Empingham into bat and tight bowling, coupled with superb catching, particulary from S. Sackey, reduced them early on. A. Green and S. Jepson (2-15) created the opportunities and made runs hard to come by. Follow-up bowling from R. Mcbain (1-17), A, Barnes (1-21) and Sackey (2-25) continued to take wickets as Empingham struggled with the slow conditions of the wicket. Green (4-44) returned as the innings closed.
Barrowby lost early wickets in reply as S. Naylor (3-14) bowled with great discipline. After a foundation was created, it was left to G. Green (67no) and A. Green (40no) to knock off the required runs.
Division Four
Barkston 191 all out
Wakerley & Barrowden 179 all out
BARKSTON lost early wickets before the fireworks started.
A. Ingram (61) and D. Glover (75) hit the ball all over the ground and beyond. Youngster Ingram’s maiden half-century came with a big four, with Glover’s not far behind.
In reply, some tight bowling from A. Jameson and J. Braithwaite kept the game Barkston’s way. A quick Wakerley burst brought the match back on an even keel, but fine fielding and catches turned it back in Barkston’s favour.
N. Jameson (5-53) took his fifth wicket with his last ball, and some unusally tight bowling from Glover gave Barkston full fielding points.
South Notts League
Division H
Belvoir 2nd 90 all out
Edingley 53-5
(match abandoned - rain)
ON a damp pitch, Belvoir were reduced to 31-4 in the first nine overs, then the next four wickets fell for just five runs.
Belvoir skipper John Copley saved some face with a gutsy 41 from 47 deliveries.
In reply, Edingley stuttered to 16 in 10 overs and then lost two wickets to the fired up and tight bowling of Fazackerley and Bottomley, one to a brilliant diving catch in the gully by John Copley.
Matt Clark (26no) hit two sixes but three wickets fell cheaply at the other end to good bowling and an excellent run-out when Fazackerley and James Fellows combined.
After 24 overs, the ominous black clouds unloaded to bring a premature end to proceedings.
