Grantham and Gibraltar teams mourn cricketer Gary De’Ath

Former Grantham Cricket Club player Gary De’Ath has died in Gibraltar, aged 55.

Gary began his cricketing career with Buckminster in 1975 where he followed his father and Bucky legend Bunt into the first team.

Following a couple of seasons, he moved to Grantham CC and enjoyed many happy seasons playing under the guidance of captain and club stalwart Mick Marsh. The last English club Gary played for was Woolsthorpe-by-Belvoir.

He also played football for Buckminster, Coles Cranes and Meres Rovers, and was a devoted Nottingham Forest supporter.

He moved to Gibraltar in 1982 where he enjoyed his most successful years in cricket. He played for the UK civilians’ club side and the Gibraltar national team. In total, Gary played 65 one day internationals for his adopted country, and featured in five World Cups and five European Championships.

The Gibraltar Cricket Association and Gary’s family received condolences notices from cricket associations around the world.

Gary leaves widow Bharti and children Chantal and Shaun.

A memorial service will be held for Gary at Holy Cross Church, Great Ponton, on Thursday (January 10) at 1pm. Donations if desired to Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance.

Gary is pictured at Grantham CC’s old London Road ground.
