Witham Wheelers juvenile Karl Baillie performed well in the three-day Isle of Man Youth Tour at the weekend.

Contesting the under-16 category, which had a field of 70 riders, Karl finished 10th in the opening prologue time trial along Douglas promenade, six seconds down on the stage winner.

The 25-mile second stage featured a half-mile climb on each of the five laps. Karl went for the finish on the final climb, only to be pipped on the line by eventual overall winner Joe Fry, to promote himself to third overall.

Karl was disappointed to see a two-man break get away on the final stage. He chased but finished in the bunch, losing one place overall to finish a creditable fourth, just two seconds off a podium place.

The result also put the Grantham rider in a strong position overall in the National Circuit Race Series.

l There was a good turnout of Witham Wheelers for the latest Velo 99 road race at Norwell.

Best placed at the end of the 33-mile event was Neil Sentance who finished second in the final sprint to the line, with clubmate Paul Conneely just behind in third. Chris Samler and Chris Carter took sixth and seventh respectively.

l Jennifer McAndrew rode strongly in a qualifying event for the East Midlands Inter-regional Track Squad at Scunthorpe last Friday.

She went from the gun to win the one-lap girls’ sprint and finished in the top three in her other qualifying races.

Robert McAndrew did well in his first race as an under-14 rider.

Robert and Jennifer were back in action in the Ixworth Criterium last Monday. Not intimidated by the older riders, Jennifer finished ninth in the women’s event in a field of more than 20. She also claimed the third girl prize in the youth under-16 race.

Also one of the youngest in his race, Robert finished in the middle of the field.

l The fourth round of Witham Wheelers’ 10-mile Tuesday time trial series saw 13 improvements, with James Woodward knocking almost a minute off his previous best.

Quickest rider was Peter Cocker in 23min 8sec with triathlete Patrick Cutmore second in 23.32. Third placed Martin Hedley (24.27) won the veterans’ prize.
