THREE members of Witham Wheelers kicked off the hill climb season in style in the Glossop Kinder Velo event on Sunday.

Jim took third place overall, finishing more than two minutes quicker than the time he recorded last year for the 3.3-mile Snake Pass climb. He was just 15 seconds adrift of top class winner Peter Tadros (In Gear Quickvit Trainsharp RT) in 13min 34sec.

Fourteen-year-old James Carter was making his debut in open hill climbs and rode very strongly and for such a novice paced the climb very well, finishing second junior in the event with a time of 18.55. Chris Carter also had an excellent ride to improve on his time from last year by more than three minutes in 18.01.

l Under-14 Karl Baillie took part in the Scunthorpe Open Omnium track meeting on Saturday.

The omnium race consisted of a one-lap time trial, three-lap pursuit, six-lap scratch race and six-lap points race. Karl rode consistently throughout, placing in the top three in each event and finished an excellent third overall, and first East Midlands rider. Overall winner was Joe Walker, son of ex-Milk Race winner Chris Walker.

Peter Cocker contested the under-16 omnium held over a one-lap time trial, four-lap pursuit, eight-lap scratch race and eight-lap points race.

Peter started slowly in the one-lap time trial but a good pursuit improved his position. A bold move with two laps to go in the scratch event failed, before a good ride in the points pulled him back up to seventh overall and second East Midlands rider.
