WITHAM Wheeler Karl Baillie, partnered with Will Perret from Heanor Clarion, competed in the National Youth Madison Championships at Manchester Velodrome, as part of the National Track Championships on Saturday.

The qualifying heat was 10km with the first six of the 10 riders progressing to the final. Karl and Will scraped through the heat in sixth place with one point, after avoiding the crash half-way through.

In the 20km 12-team final, Karl and Will finished sixth after a few missed handsling changes, a very satisfying result in their first Madison final, in what was a very fast race with yet more crashes.

l Four Wheelers took part in one of the last time trials of the season in the Ratae RC 25 event on the A46, near Six Hills, on Saturday.

The rolling course and breezy conditions were not conducive to fast times. Martin Hedley was the quickest Wheeler, finishing in 1hr 4min 46sec.

Others: Dave Herd 1.07.08, Paul Fairey 1.11.27, Tony Hardenberg 1.12.09.

l The third round of the Lincolnshire Cyclo-cross League was held at Scunthorpe last Sunday. Witham Wheelers had two father and daughter entrants.

Seven-year-old Jessica East rode her first ‘cross and was very pleased just to finish the long under-12s’ course. Eleanor Crawford won the 30-minute youth race under-14 girl category and was third girl overall.

In the senior race, Sean East rode well to finish 39th and Chris Crawford came in 58th.

l Chris Carter was the only Witham Wheeler to ride the CDLCA 10 on the A1 at Long Bennington last Saturday – and returned home with a personal best.

Conditions were good with only a slight breeze on the outward leg and tailwind return.

Continuing his good form, Chris did a brilliant ride, dipping under the 22-minute barrier with a new best of 21.48.
