THREE members of Witham Wheelers took part in the first local time trial of the season at Peterborough on Sunday.
The trio rode the Kings Cliffe Flyers 12-mile event which comprised two laps of a sporting and quite technical six-mile circuit. A leg busting climb leading up to the start/finish line made for an interesting race.
Sporting a new oval chainring on his time trial steed, Jim Coleman took his first victory of the season, winning by a margin of more than a minute and a half.
Kim Paxton finished as second fastest lady rider, and Kim’s Pedal Pushers bike shop partner Neil Sentance rode well to bag a top 10 position.
Results: Jim Coleman 26min 18sec, Neil Sentence 30.56, Kim Paxton 35.03.
Three Witham Wheelers competed in the final round of the winter Thetford Mountain Series on Sunday.
Conditions were perfect for racing through the woods, with a lot of singletrack and a fair few fire-roads keeping the pace very high.
With a full field of 500 riders entered, Dave Moulds enjoyed his and the club’s best ride of the series, finishing a very respectable 38th after completing five laps. Only one rider managed six.
Finishing 78th with four laps completed, John Clifton also had a good ride, although a crash also dropped him some places.
Jon Beere completed two laps before finding the pace too hot for his liking.
A hilly 63-mile route from Grantham through the Vale of Belvoir to Melton, then on to Tilton-on-the-Hill and back via Oakham, proved a real challenge for the 25 riders in the latest Witham Wheelers reliability ride.
However despite the testing route, punctures and the odd route-finding challenge, all riders enjoyed the spring-like sunshine and most achieved their target average speed.
This Sunday’s ride is a 70-miler with the option of a shorter 50-mile route available. The first group is scheduled to leave Grantham Cricket Club in Gorse Lane at 8.30am. All welcome.
