Witham Wheelers teenager Jennifer McAndrew won the National Junior Girls’ 25-mile Time Trial Championship at Manchester on Saturday.

The race was staged on a “sporting course” on narrow, twisty roads with a few hills thrown in for good measure, and fortunately the weather remained dry.

Seventeen-year-old Jennifer was not outright favourite on the day, in fact at least three girls had recorded faster times then her this year, but her build-up to this race had been good with personal bests recorded in both her 10-mile and 25-mile disciplines.

At the half-way time check, she was up on her nearest rival but only by nine seconds, and her stamina was put to the test over the final 12.5 miles as the conditions began to deteriorate.

Jennifer dug deep into her reserves, catching slower competitors in front of her, to record a time of 1hr 3min 42sec, not her fastest this year, but pleasing for the course and good enough for first place – taking the win in the end by more than a minute from the second placed girl.

Returning to the event headquarters for the prize presentations, Jennifer shared the stage with Paralympian and world champion Dame Sarah Storey who won the Senior Women’s event.
