CYCLING: Witham Wheelers out in force for Velo race

Witham Wheelers were well represented in the latest Velo 99 road race at Car Colston.

All six handicap groups came together on the final run-in to the finish, with Mark Kokosinski storming through to take the sprint from fellow Wheeler Martin Milne, despite a front tyre puncture.

Also taking part were Dave Mould who won Group Four, Mark Colclough, Tony Mendham, Dave Herd, Gary Rands, Carol Milne, and Crispin Bridges-Webb who punctured with a couple of laps remaining.

l Pedal Pushers members performed well in the latest circuit race at Darley Moor for Elite/1/2/3 category riders.

The Grantham team controlled the race with Peter Cocker finishing a comfortable second behind professional Tom Bustard (Node 4 Giordana), with team-mates Karl Baillie, Steve Young and Harry Browning sprinting in not far behind in the chasing group.

l There was a good representation of local riders in the second round of the East Midlands Road Race League at Mickleover.

Best placed was Pedal Pushers’ Steve Young in third place, with debutant juniors James Carter (Witham Wheelers) and Alistair Golby (VO2 Dev Team) finishing in the bunch with Wheeler Martin Ludlam and Harry Browning (Pedal Pushers).

l Forty-riders turned out for Witham Wheelers’ first handicap league 10-mile time trial of the year last Tuesday.

Fastest on the night was Harry Browning in 23min 51sec, almost 20sec clear of John Pilgrim. Adam Egner was fastest youth rider in 25.35 with Lara Thornhill quickest lady in 27.34.

First on handicap was Mark Bailey, with Rick Yates the best veteran on standard.
