Grantham Town were unable to execute a St Valentine’s Day massacre but still extended their unbeaten run to 17 games after a battling performance against Matlock Town at The Meres on Tuesday night.

Following a peculiarly slow start, the match soon picked up pace and never relented until the final whistle.

Play swung from end to end, but the Gingerbreads had by far the majority of chances with wave after wave of attacking moves.

Matlock’s best opportunities came from a couple of intense periods of pressure on the Grantham goal, but the Gingerbreads weathered the storm and, in general, harried their opponents to such an extent that shooting chances became practicably unfeasible.

Yes, Matlock’s Niall McManus hit the post towards the end of the first half, but then Grantham’s Lee Shaw had the ball in the net in the 63rd minute, only for the goal to be overruled by an offside flag.

At the end of a scintillating 90 minutes, both sides were able to proudly walk off the pitch knowing they had truly given their all after they ran each other ragged throughout in a truly entertaining spectacle for football fans.

The Gingerbreads remain fifth in the Northern Premier League Premier Division.
