Grantham Town go down to single goal at Kendal

Have your say

The Gingerbreads again had the better of the game but again came away from a match with no points – and this time no goals. Kendal were put under pressure for a lot of the game but Grantham could not get the goal they needed.

Both sides attacked from the word go whenever they could. Paul Grimes delivered an early cross but too deep for any Grantham team-mates. At the other end, Kevin Leadbetter hit a shot at Jimmy Lindley. Phil Watt reacted first when Kendal dropped a free kick into the danger zone as Grantham struggled to defend the free kick.

The deciding goal of the game came on 14 minutes. A long clearance from Kendal goalkeeper Craig Doodson was flicked on by Sefton Gonzales. Leadbetter gambled and got in front of Damien Magee to lift his shot over Lindley.

Grantham went close to equalising five minutes later. Lee Potts beat two defenders and delivered a perfect cross for Grimes. He glanced a header past Doodson but saw it hit the post and bounced clear.

The combination that created the goal for Kendal caused Grantham more problems on 24 minutes. Gonzales again played a good ball on for Leadbetter. This time he delivered a low cross that was not too far away from being turned in by Josh Amis.

The rest of the first half was all Grantham. Kendal defended well and kept chances to a minimum. Ash Robinson hit a ball that was just too long for Emeka Nwadike, and Jamie McGhee shot over the crossbar as Grantham struggled to test Doodson.

It was the same story after the break. Grantham pressed hard while Kendal relied on breaks. The home side almost capitalised on a slip by Nwadike 10 minutes into the second half. Amis tried to get Gonzales away but Sam Purcicoe covered across well to avert the danger.

Jimmy Lindley made a good save to Gonzales just after the hour. A free kick found the Kendal striker well but he could not get his shot past Lindley. Grantham broke quickly from the corner and Robinson got into a shooting position, only for his effort to be deflected wide.

The Gingerbreads kept up the pressure with Potts and Conor Higginson exchanging passes to make an opening. Potts held the ball well and got his shot off, but Doodson dived low to turn the ball round the post.

Play immediately switched to the other end as Alex Ralph played in Amis. He then found Leadbetter but again Lindley saved well.

Purcicoe won a strong challenge as Grantham looked for the equaliser. He played in Higginson but dragged his shot past the post. Solid defending from Kendal kept Grantham at bay as the Gingerbreads’ time ran out.
