Northern Premier League
Skelmersdale United 1
Grantham Town 1
Grantham Town held the league’s leaders to a 1-1 draw for the second time in two weeks.
Once again, the goals both came in the first half and again it was the Gingerbreads who scored first. Skelmersdale replied with a minute of the first half remaining and the two sides remained deadlocked until the final whistle.
But it was the home side who threatened initially when prolific goal scorer Dean Astbury brought a save from Gingerbreads keeper Dan Haystead in the opening minutes.
Stefan Bilyk gave Grantham the lead in the 21st minute after he was set up by fellow front man Paul Grimes.
Skelmersdale had chances through Connor McCarthy, whose effort was saved by Haystead, and Scott Bakkor could only hit the side netting.
But the home side got their reward on the stroke of half time. Fine inter-play between Aidan Kirkbride and McCarthy set up the former to fire home the equaliser.
A draw was perhaps once again a fair result as the second half saw the two sides fairly evenly balanced.
The Gingerbreads defended stoutly but still had the occasional foray forward, with Grimes having the ball smothered from his feet by brave United goalie Martin Fearon 10 minutes into the second half.
At the other end, Haystead came to Grantham’s rescue once again in the 69th minute to deny McCarthy from his curled effort. Kirkbride then went close with a drive that just rose over the bar.
Bilyk had an opportunity to be the real Gingerbreads hero of the day with 10 minutes remaining, but this time Fearon was equal to his strike and tipped the ball over the crossbar.
The final chance of the game saw Skelmersdale’s Bakkor connect with a Pete Wylie cross, but the Gingerbreads were relieved to see no result to his endeavours and took home a share of the points.
