GRANTHAM Town kicked off this season’s FA Cup campaign with a solid but slender preliminary round win over county and league rivals Stamford at The Meres on Saturday.
A single first half Gio Carchedi goal gave Town victory and put the Gingerbreads into the mix for a first round qualifying home fixture against Arnold Town next Saturday.
Town’s joint manager Jimmy Albans said he and co-boss Wayne Hallcro were satisfied with the result.
Albans said: “We showed that we are getting where we want to be. The whole performance showed just what we can do when everyone does their jobs. All round the pitch we won our battles.
“We played a bit deeper and tried to make sure we left no gaps to run in to. We played with three up front and put them on the back foot.
“Our midfield dominated theirs right across the park. That allowed us to play a lot of the game in the final third of the pitch.”
The Gingerbreads were without their talismanic skipper Ben Saunders who was not fully recovered from knee ligament damage sustained against Rainworth. Albans said the tall Town front man had trained last Tuesday and Thursday but was still not 100 per cent on Saturday, and may still not be ready for tomorrow’s game.
Albans said: “It gave us the chance to put something different on the park. Even given the way the 11 from last Saturday performed, we can change things if we want with Paul Grimes, Rob Norris and Niall O’Rafferty on the bench.
“The atmosphere in the squad is tremendous. We are getting seven day notices for players, but they are not interested.”
Grantham kick off at Belper tomorrow at 3pm and host Hucknall Town at The Meres on Tuesday night, kick-off 7.45pm.
