Grantham Town took four points from a possible six over the weekend to open up an eight point gap on teams below them.
Town began with a solid win over then third-placed Rushall Olympic, but were given a harder than expected test at bottom side Eastwood Town.
Joint manager Gary Sucharewycz said: “We knew Monday would be tough. We did look at whether to freshen things up from Saturday, but after the performance then, it was hard to do so.
“We opted to go with the momentum from a win and believed we would be better than we were.”
Sucharewycz said they would be trying to make themselves as safe as can be from their final games: “The lads are all aware the eight points at this stage of the season may not be enough and can evaporate very quickly.”
