Grantham Town started the month with a confident victory over higher placed opposition.

The Gingerbreads went in front in the eighth minute when Paul Grimes’s strike sneaked in at the post past outstretched Whitby keeper Shane Bland.

The visitors levelled on 23 minutes after Grantham conceded a free kick on the edge of the D. Craig Farrell stepped up and blasted past the wall and in off Dan Haystead’s glove.

But Grantham were back in front seven minutes before half time. Man-of-the-match Jack McGovern delivered a good free kick to the far post where Deon Meikle rose high to head into the back of the net with aplomb.

The Gingerbreads extended their lead seven minutes after the break. The tap-in from close range was claimed by home defender Lee Ridley but looked to be an own goal.

Both sides struck the post as they battled out the rest of the half, with Grantham holding out to record a pleasing win for the majority of the 230 in attendance.
