Grantham Town 1

The Gingerbreads came back with nothing from an away trip again as they were made to look second best.

Witton seemed more determined to get a result from the game than Grantham and got one.

A bright start from the Gingerbreads saw Paul Grimes delivering a cross that Witton only just cleared from Lee Potts, before the home side took control of the game.

With the breeze in their favour, Grantham were pushed back by Witton. Daniel Andrews was given space to run at the Grantham defence but shot over the Grantham crossbar.

Chances were shared by both sides as the half progressed. Michael Towey headed just wide from a corner, while Deon Meikle did well at the other end to deny Anthony Gardner after Andrews put him in. Rhys Lewis and Greg Smith then won headers to put Paul Grimes clear. Under pressure from Alistair Brown, Grimes’s shot failed to trouble Matthew Cooper in the Witton goal.

Joshua Hancock gave Witton the lead after 24 minutes. Grantham stood off and allowed Hancock to run at the Gingerbreads defence. From 25 yards out with no challenge in the offing, he drove a low shot past Haystead.

Witton continued to have the better of the game. Paul Lister misjudged a goal kick from Cooper to let in Alex Titchiner. Fortunately for Grantham, he had too heavy a touch and the ball ran through to Haystead.

Eight minutes from half time, Witton doubled their lead. A defence-splitting pass from midfield game Titchiner another chance. This time his first touch was good as he steered the ball past Haystead.

Town seemed dead and buried at that point, but got a lifeline just before the break. A good corner from Jack McGovern was firmly met by Towey with a firm header that beat Cooper.

The Gingerbreads failed to capitalise after the break. Although a header from Smith dropped just wide, Grantham did not stretch Cooper.

Albion’s Scott Bakkor got the better of Lister, but there was no-one there to meet his cut-back. Another through-ball for Titchiner saw the offside flag stay down, but Grantham got enough bodies back to deny the home side.

Haystead was kept the busiest of the two keepers. Another good shot from Gardner was turned round the post and the Grantham goalkeeper was smartly off his line to deny Bakkor.

As the game entered the last quarter, Grantham put more pressure on the home side but could not break down a tight defence. A long free-kick from Haystead was flicked on by Paul Lister for Jordan Hempenstall. His first time shot was well saved by Copper.

The Witton goalkeeper was also well placed to gather efforts from McGovern and Meikle as Grantham ran out of time.
