LETTER: Champions Grantham Town deserve day to remember

CAN I inform all the Journal’s readers that this Saturday the football computer has come up with a champions v second place team match at The Meres.

So, not only a chance to see Grantham Town receive a trophy but also the mouth-watering prospect of a good game of football between the two top teams. And just to add spice, our visitors are none other than Ilkeston FC, our old rivals who are promising to bring 300 of their own followers.

This season’s achievement is the first milestone in an ambitious plan. We held a fans forum with the joint managers and the chairman Steve Boam last Sunday morning and what clearly emerged from that meeting, from all connected with the club, was a shared ambition to use this season as a launch pad for putting Grantham back on the non-league map. We are not going up just to make up the numbers in the Premier division!

So, my advice to the good folk of Grantham is get up to The Meres nice and early this Saturday; enjoy a drink in the bar, soak up the atmosphere that success brings and then savour the occasion. Remember, the last time we won a league title was in the 1997/98 season – and yes believe it or not the runners-up that season were also Ilkeston!

At the conclusion of the match, the Championship Trophy will be presented quickly followed by a celebration in Strikers Bar, with a chance to talk to the managers and players and the people who run the club. If you then still have the energy there’s a disco at no charge.

No excuses come along and be a big part of a day for Grantham to remember.
