Colsterworth Colts Football Club under-11s held the end of season finals day for the Grantham Youth League Cup last Sunday.

More than 250 players, parents and fans gathered to celebrate a fantastic day of football, with closely fought finals between Navenby and Ancaster for the Shield and Colsterworth Colts and Northgate for the Cup.

Colts won 3-1 after being 1-0 down at half time. Goal scorers were Harvey Colyer, Riley Wright and Max Rawson. Man of the match was keeper Luca Leeson.

Navenby won the Plate on penalties after the match ended 5-5 after extra time.

This was the inaugural event hosted at Buckminster Playing Fields for the under-11 Colts and was a resounding success.

Louis Bland, the Colts Manager, who is also a community coach with Peterborough United, was hugely impressed with the quality of the football and the crowd on the day: “There were some great goals, comebacks and both games were played with terrific spirit, in front of a big crowd. In addition to the football, we also raised over £750 for some new goal posts. We’re all delighted and we can’t wait for next season to start.”

The crowd and players not only enjoyed the end-of-season matches, bouncy castle, beat the goalie and spot the ball, but also the impressive cake stall and pop up café supplied by Leeson Butchers of Oakham. The Colts’ sponsors pulled out all the stops, keeping the crowd refreshed with bacon butties, burgers and fairy cakes.

Andrea Leeson commented: “We have lived locally for many years and are big supporters of the Colts. The kids have had a super season and we are their biggest fans.”

Buckminster Estate managing director Stephen Vickers expressed his delight at the turnout and the fact that the playing fields were back in use. He said: “Many villages are really struggling to keep their sports fields used and enjoyed by the community. To see the clubhouse and grounds teeming with people was an absolute pleasure.”

Meanwhile, Colsterworth Colts president Mark Bland presented the man-of-the-match awards and the trophies, accompanied by a rousing speech in which he thanked sponsors Leeson Butchers and Grantham Estates for maintenance of the facilities.

Mark Bland concluded: “It’s a thriving family club and we’ve all enjoyed a fantastic season.”

Coached by Louis Bland and assisted by Mark, Grantham Cup winners Colsterworth Colts U11 were Alfie McGettigan, Archie Tagg, Charlie Vickers, Charlie Morley, Harry Wardle, Harvey Colyer, Harvey Wesson, Jason Seers, Joshua Mills, Louis Humphries, Luca Leeson, Max Goring, Max Rawson, Riley Wright, Sam Morgan, Toby Watchorn and Tristan Wharton.
