Division One Cup
Holdingham AFC 0
Colsterworth United 1
Colsterworth United paved their way into the semi-final of this cup competition with an impressive battling display against an in form Holdingham.
The game was played in awful weather conditions which made the first half of the game a midfield battle between the two sides, with neither keeper really having to make a save.
But the second half was different. Colsterworth kicked off and straight away were under the cosh, Holdingham pushing forward and putting the visitors’ defence under more and more pressure, but nothing got past the now formidable back lines.
Colsterworth then started to get back into the game, with striker Dave Spratley lobbing the keeper from 25 yards only for the shot to hit the crossbar.
On 60 minutes, Colsterworth were dealt a blow when midfielder Kyle Withers was sent off for his conduct towards the referee. Colsterworth’s manager shuffled his team accordingly, hoping that they could hold on, but had nothing to fear.
The winner came on 65 minutes. Colsterworth won a throw-in inside the opponents’ half. It was taken by Lewis Reid who found Matt Bryan who, making his full debut, turned on a sixpence, beat the defender and from eight yards out slotted the ball into the bottom right corner with the outside of his boot, narrowly evading the diving keeper. Jubilant celebrations followed.
Holdingham pushed and pushed trying to get an equaliser, but to no avail, either coming up against the United defence or goalkeeper Grant Davies.
Colsterworth held on with 10 men to book their place in the semi-finals.
Colsterworth: Davies, Reid, Tolley, Hack (c), Daykin, Bryan (MoM), Withers, L. Ballam, Spratley, Turner, Stokes, Dilloway, Burkitt, O. Hutchinson.
