Harrowby United bounced back from a midweek cup exit defeat with a league victory over Bedfordshire visitors Potton United.

The Royals had the best of the early exchanges and on two occasions Jamie Fitzgibbon caused problems for the Arrows defence with good runs down the right flank. Harrowby’s first real effort came in the 22nd minute when Liam Harper shot just wide from the right side of the penalty area.

Potton took a deserved lead five minutes later when another cross from the right was turned into his own goal by Arrows defender Sam Hill, under pressure from Joe Avis.

Harrowby responded with an effort from Simon Bolland on the half hour mark which went just over after good work from Lee Shaw. Jack Drury, in the Arrows goal, did well on 39 minutes to dive full length through a crowd of players and clear the danger in the six yard box. The Royals had a let-off on the stroke of half time when, from a corner, Jack Whyley’s header was cleared off the goal line.

Harrowby upped their game in the second half pressing the visitors back from the kick-off. Potton keeper Craig Lewis produced a good save in the 58th minute to keep out a Sam Kirton free kick. The Royals had the chance to double their lead when Bolland was caught in possession in midfield. The ball was played through to Nick Cooper who, through one-on-one, shot narrowly wide.

The introduction of Martin Wormall and Scott Webb just after the hour mark changed Harrowby’s fortunes. Webb set up Shaw after 66 minutes, keeper Lewis pushing the Shaw’s shot on to the post and behind for a corner. Two minutes later, Webb played in Wormall whose lob beat the keeper but also the cross bar.

With 20 minutes remaining, another ball from Webb found Shaw whose shot was partially saved by Lewis before being cleared off the line by Nick Collins. The equaliser came a minute later when referee Mr Brierley-Lewis spotted a hand ball by Carl Ashwell as the ball pinballed around the penalty area, and Wormall calmly converted the spot kick.

The second goal arrived three minutes later after sustained Harrowby pressure. Good work again from Webb down the left ended with a cross into the Potton penalty area which was met with a superb header from Harper.

The decisive third goal was scored by skipper Bolland after 79 minutes. He carried the ball into the Potton penalty area before finishing with a neat shot past Lewis which nestled just inside the right hand post.

The win moved Harrowby back up to second in the league and preserved their unbeaten league record.

Man of the match was Lee Shaw.
