United Counties League
League Cup, first round
Harrowby United 3
Wootton Blue Cross 0
HARROWBY produced a convincing performance to defeat fellow UCL Division One side Wooton Blue Cross and record their first win of the season.
Playing some nice football from the start, the Arrows made the breakthrough after 23 minutes when Martin Wormall capitalised on an error in the Wooton backline, nipping in to poke the ball past the keeper.
Harrowby went 2-0 up when Wormall added his second from the penalty spot after a handball in the box, following good work from Bobby Lee.
The home side lost left back Tom Vorley to injury shortly before half time after a poor challenge left him with a badly swollen ankle.
The lead was increased not long into the second half when Owen Sheridan lashed the ball home, following a goalmouth scramble during which Lee Shaw and Bobby Lee had shots blocked.
Harrowby closed out a niggly end to the game, picking up bookings for Lee Shaw and Simon Bolland, to keep their first clean sheet of the season and were seldom threatened, although keeper Jack Drury made a good save in the last minute.
Arrows man of the match was Owen Sheridan.
United’s co-manager Mark Fardell was full of praise for the young Arrows. He said: “We knew a result wasn’t far away. The lads have never dropped their heads and have shown a great attitude and determination to get the first win. In training they are working hard and enjoying it.
“We made a couple of positional changes today and hopefully now we can kick on and pick some points up on the road. More signings should be made in the next couple of weeks.”
