NICKNAMED Scrabble, Gary Sucharewycz grabbed a point for the Gingerbreads with a late equaliser.
A goal at the end of the first half had put Grantham behind but dogged defending kept the Gingerbreads in the game to give them the chance to level matters.
Grantham started brighter than their hosts and forced a couple of corners in the opening minutes. Despite the pressure, Chasetown goalkeeper Ryan Price was not troubled, Ben Jeavons clearing Nick Langford’s dangerous cross.
The home side broke out and Ramone Stephens ran past Sucharewycz and played a cross for Gary Hay. He stepped over the ball leaving a perfect chance for strike partner Danny Smith, but Smith lifted his shot over the crossbar.
With Grantham on the back foot, Stephens caused problems for the Gingerbreads defence. He made space again for a cross that Rob Murray did well to claim. John Branch delivered another good quality ball into the Grantham penalty area, Sam Persicoe clearing the Gingerbreads lines this time.
Chasetown almost took the lead after 28 minutes. A free kick delivered on to the edge of the Grantham 6yd box was met by Smith. Murray’s goalkeeping was untidy but effective as he kept the ball out of the net.
Alistair Asher proved Grantham’s biggest threat as his free kick delivery led to chances for the Gingerbreads. Twice in a few minutes he dropped free kicks into the Scholars penalty area for Matt Millns. Millns put one over the top, then a second wide of the target.
A minute before the break, the home side took the lead. A ball into the edge of the Grantham penalty area was flicked on into the Gingerbreads box. Hay reacted quickest and just beat Murray to the ball. He took it round the Grantham keeper and slotted into the empty net.
Either side of half time, Grantham had chances to level the game. Straight after Chasetown scored, another Asher free kick found Millns. His header crashed off the post with Price beaten.
After the break, Ben Saunders almost put Langford in but his pass was just too long and Price collected the ball comfortably. A minute later, a low cross from Ben Saunders bisected the 6yd box agonisingly close to Langford who couldn’t get the vital touch.
The Scholars built up pressure on the Grantham goal. However, solid defending kept Chasetown to shots from distance. Murray comfortably fielded most of their efforts. The only time he was beaten was on 64 minutes. Duncan Horler let fly from 25 yards out. His shot beat Murray but hit the post and went out for a goal kick.
Grantham weathered the pressure and went close on 78 minutes. Danny Hargreaves’ corner went to Sucharewycz who got a touch and turned the ball to Millns. His effort flew just over the bar.
The equaliser came two minutes before the end of normal time. Asher’s free kick found Millns again. His header hit the crossbar this time but fell for Sucharewycz to force a header over the line from two yards out.
