Northern Premier League
Grantham Town 1
Ilkeston FC 0
A single first-half goal was enough to give the Gingerbreads a win over old foes Ilkeston.
Mid-table Grantham’s battling, workmanlike performance was in contrast to the visitors’ lacklustre display, with the visitors showing little to prove why they are second in the league.
After a fairly slow start to the game and a couple of half-chances for either side, Town went ahead in the eighth minute when a string of passes led to Lee Ndlovu tucking the ball home past Ilkeston goalkeeper Jordan Smith.
Opportunities came at either end throughout, with Grantham definitely the dominant side in the first half hour, before Ilkeston started to show more cohesion.
The Gingerbreads’ best chance to double their advantage came in the 36th minute, but Michael Holllingworth’s thumping shot was just stopped on the goal line by Smith.
Ndlovu could have doubled his personal tally with two minutes of the first half remaining, but he was blocked out after beating the keeper.
The second half was less entertaining than the first, with Liam Read and Danny Meadows having the best chances for the home side and Ilkeston threatening very rarely, as much of the play was battled out in midfield.
