Grantham Town FC held the first of two trial days for its new Academy on Saturday.

Thirty-seven potential students attended, along with their parents. They were greeted by Gingerbreads club president Roger Booth and were then given presentations by Academy manager Alex Cross and from Matt Baker on behalf of the education provider SCL. A tour of the stadium and the classroom facility that will be used at the leisure centre followed, together with the new 3G pitch where the football training will take place.

With first team and football club representatives looking on, the trialists were put through a number of exercises by Alex and Jack Rounsley (Academy strength and conditioning coach) with scouts Mark Bland and Karl Silverwood keeping an eye on the quality of the players.

Speaking after the trial, Alex commented: “I was greatly impressed with both the numbers that attended and the quality of the potential students which exceeded my expectations. Things look good for the future of the scheme.

“The biggest positive for me from the trial is the feedback we have received from parents and players who enjoyed their day, with praise to how professionally everything was set up and delivered.”

Alex and his scouts are looking at who should be moving on to the next stage of the application process which involves a one-to-one interview with the education provider: “We have found this part of the process more difficult than first thought because of the standard of trialists. In the coming days, we will inform SCL of the successful trialists and their will be interviews set up from there.”
