KESTEVEN and Grantham Girls’ School sixth-former Sonal Modi has received a national award in recognition of her work helping children get involved in sports.

Sonal, 17, of the Manthorpe estate, Grantham, is a member of East Midlands Youth Forum and was invited to a special ceremony in Birmingham to receive the Young Volunteer of the Year Award.

Sonal said: “I’ve done a lot for badminton but I was not expecting to receive the award.

“It was a nice surprise.”

Sonal is a member of the East Midlands Youth Forum as a young sports ambassador.

She has made presentations around Lincolnshire to help promote badminton whilst also learning to become a coach.

She said: “I have been playing badminton for four or five years and now play at county standard.

“My coach has offered me more opportunities to coach and I am currently doing my Level 1 so I can coach with the assistance of a senior coach.

“After that I want to get my Level 2 so that I can coach on my own.”
