Meeting about school funding for special educational needs

Monday, 10.05am- A MEETING about the proposed changes to the way schools receive funding for children with special educational needs is being held by Lincolnshire County Council this week.

Funds have traditionally been allocated centrally through the statement process to meet low to moderate need. If the changes go ahead these funds would be used by schools for support and assistance for children with additional needs in mainstream provision.

Officers from Children's Services will explain the proposals and parents and carers will be able to give their own views which will become part of the consultation process.

Executive Councillor for Children's Services Patricia Bradwell said: "Although we have consulted widely, these extra meetings give the chance to meet with any parents or carers who haven't had the chance to hear the full proposals or comment on them. We want to hear as many views as possible before taking anything forward.

"This new process will enable more children to get the support they need quickly through schools being given the resources to use more flexibly and more responsively. Quicker and earlier intervention will help meet needs better and provide more effective support for children with low to moderate needs rather than going through the statementing process.

"This is not a cost cutting measure and we will continue to use statements for children with additional needs."

The meeting will take place at Springfield House Business and Conference Centre, Springfield Business Park, Springfield Road, Grantham, on Thursday from 6.30pm until 8.30pm.
