Grantham Badminton Club men’s fifth team notched up their first win in their second match of the season.
The team defeated Belvoir Melton 7-2 at home in Division One of the Melton League. Stars were Dave Frobisher with Carl Jennings who claimed three wins, with both Dave Chambers/Andrew Watson and Rod Tyler/Jack Railton securing two from three.
The mixed first team struggled all week in Division One of the Newark League, narrowly losing 5-4 at Lincoln St Andrews and 9-0 away to Cross O’ Cliff.
Against St Andrews, Kerry Durham with Jan Bailey won two rubbers, while Susie Steeples with Nick Gill and Jaz Gilbert with Chung Chan picked up one rubber each. They faced Cross O’Cliff with only two regular team players available; Susie Steeples played with Dave Coleman, Kerry Durham with Rob Scarborough and Adrian Ackroyd partnered Jaz Gilbert.
Grantham ladies’ first team also lost 7-2 away to a very strong Westside in Newark League Division One. Kerry Durham with Bex Davison and Susie Steeples with Jaz Gilbert each scored one victory, and Laura Graves partnered Zoe Foote.
In Melton League Mixed Division One, Grantham’s third team had a difficult away match with plastic shuttles in Bottesford’s unheated hall.
Two rubbers were narrowly lost in the third end. One involved Rob Howbrook with Sandra Jennings, and the other Rob Scarborough with Jaz Gilbert, who also scored a valuable win against another opposition pair, as did Declan Hill with Zoe Foote, to take the final score to 7-2 in favour of Bottesford.
With each rubber won being worth points in the Melton League format, two away rubbers ere especially valuable.
