BADMINTON: Grantham teams enjoy mixed fortunes

Grantham Badminton Club teams enjoyed mixed fortunes in matches last week.

The men’s fourth team lost 6-3 at home to Woodborough in Newark League Division Three. Ian Witham with Matt Whittle claimed two rubbers, while Daniel Watson with Dean Patel added a third and narrowly missed out on another. But Mike Woodhouse with Brian Coyle had a difficult time, failing to add to the Grantham tally.

The mixed first team hammered Lincoln Albion 9-0 away in Newark League Division One. The three unbeaten pairs were captain Susie Steeples with Chung Chan, Sophie Turley playing with Nick Gill, and Kerry Durham with Jan Bailey.

More success greeted the ladies’ first string in Division One of the Newark League when skipper Sophie Turley with Kerry Durham and Jaz Gilbert with Susie Steeples, scored a maximum three rubbers each in a 7-2 home win over Cross O’ Cliff.

Young reserve Zoe Foote, on her first appearance for the top flight team, clinched another rubber with Laura Graves, but narrowly missed out on their second when they lost a third end decider 21-19.
