Two Great Ponton brothers enjoyed a remarkable day at the Lincolnshire County Junior Badminton Championships at Lincoln University on Sunday

Ryan Curtis, 14, and his younger brother Ethan, 10, completed an unprecedented clean sweep of the boys’ under-15 and under-11 events – winning a total of five trophies without even losing a set.

Ryan, a student at Charles Read Academy in Corby Glen, won the under-15 singles, doubles and mixed doubles, whilst his sibling, Ethan, a student at Great Ponton Primary School, was victorious in the under-11 singles and doubles.

Top seed Ryan began proceedings by comfortably winning his group in the boys’ singles before easing to victory in the semi-finals by defeating William Sadler 21-11, 21-9. In the final, Ryan triumphed over his county doubles partner, and second seed, Ryan Chan, 21-12, 21-12.

In the doubles, Ryan, defending his title from 2015, and his partner were rarely troubled before defeating the combination of William Sadler and Gavin Wu 21-16, 21-16 in the final.

In the final match of the day, Ryan secured the grand slam by winning the mixed doubles with his good friend and partner Megan Hassall, from Bourne, with an emphatic victory in the final.

In the under-11 event, it was a great day for Grantham with Ethan and Harvey Dobson, both members of Grantham Badminton Club, contesting the singles final, with Ethan eventually prevailing in a closely fought contest, 21-15, 21-16.

In the doubles, Ethan, reigning champion from last year, successfully defended his trophy together with Harvey, with the pair being far too strong for their opponents’ on the day.
