Grantham Badminton Club suffered last week, losing most third end battles to leave scores looking worse than the real differences between teams.
The men’s third team lost 8-1 at home to Crossed Rackets in Division Two of the Newark League. Only Rob Howbrook with Declan Hill scored a rubber, with the final game a 30-28 scoreline.
Several others were lost in their third ends, including Daniel Watson playing with Carl Jennings, and Dave Chambers with Chris Graves, who lost two further rubbers in a close final end.
Away against Mars in Melton League Division One, Grantham’s third mixed team fielded two exciting new prospects in 13-year-old Holly Sparks and Yong Li.
Despite losing 8-1 in the end, Grantham put up a strong fight. Holly with Rob Scarborough took a game off Mars’s second pair before losing their third end narrowly. Eighteen-year-old Yong Li with strong performer Zoe Foote did superbly to smashing through Mars’s first pair to win 2-0. They also took the second pair to a third end which they lost narrowly. Dave Frobisher with Sandra Jennings also took a rubber to a third end before another narrow loss.
Grantham men’s first team were hit by injury and absence and went down 9-0 at home to Cross O’ Cliff.
But another exciting young prospect, Ben Attewell, had a debut opportunity straight into the first team with brother Joe Attewell and wrestled a game from the opposition before losing in the third end.
Nick Gill with Andrew Watson also won a game to force a third end decider. Martin Chambers played with Adrian Ackroyd.
