A heavyweight was won his second bout for Grantham Amateur Boxing Club.

Twenty-two-year-old Lee Chapple travelled with head coach Dean Fardell to take on Jamie Downing (Coventry University ABC) at Bar Sport in Cannock on Thursday night.

Despite still recovering from a cold and chest infection, Lee put in a solid display to claim his second victory.

The powerful-looking Downing came out looking for the big punch from the opening round, but Lee kept jabbing and moving and by the second round was quite dominant and had the Coventry man struggling.

Lee began to tire slightly in the third and final round. Downing made something of a comeback in a fairly even round, but Lee had already done enough to take a unanimous points decision.

He won his first bout for Grantham ABC last month by stopping his opponent in the first round. Dean said this latest fight against Downing had been a good bout and had shown Lee it would not always be so easy.

Dean said: “He did well, Lee was the better boxer. The first and second were his best rounds.

“He kept on boxing with double jabs and defended well.”
